Reddit user mynameisbetterthanyours420x69 recently posted that their father had shown them their grandpa’s diary from WWII. Unfortunately, it was written in shorthand so they were unable to read what it said.

Luckily, the internet came to the rescue. After sharing images of the diary on Reddit, the grandkid quickly received the diary translation.

Some should have been rejected for various ailments but the doctor asked them if they wanted to go in the army. If they said yes he would pass them. Left Camp Grant for Camp Shelby 10:10. Arrived […] 5:00 PM due to taking on freight […]. Came in to St. Louis at 8:00 PM. Slept in upper bunk. Passed through Kentucky and [Missouri] during the night. Awoke while in Tennessee. Very hilly. Mississippi very wooded many lumber mills. Many [checks] along rail road. Arrived Camp Shelby 3:15 PM.”

Shorthand is a method of rapid writing by means of abbreviations and symbols, used especially for taking dictation. The major systems of shorthand are those devised in 1837 by Sir Isaac Pitman and in 1888 by John R. Gregg.
