It has been, by far, the most technologically advanced decade in history. It seems like everything but the wheel has been reinvented and dramatically improved. Well there is one thing that was invented over 100 years ago and has remained unchanged until now. I’m talking about a blind walking cane. The well-known white stick that the majority of blind people have been using has seen no real improvement until a visually impaired engineer named Kursat Ceylan decided to put his knowledge into inventing something that would be truly life changing for a lot of visually impaired people.
He invented a smart cane called the WeWalk. It assists blind people in navigating around their environment with the help of modern technology making travel and commuting much more efficient.
Kursat is the CEO of the Young Guru Academy which is the Turkish non-profit behind the WeWalk. Because he is blind himself, he understands the restrictions and challenges that face the visually impaired.
He decided to take his technical knowledge and invent something that would not only change his life, but also the lives of many others.
“In these days, we are talking about flying cars, but these people have been using just a plain stick. As a blind person, when I am at the Metro station, I don’t know which is my exit… I don’t know which bus is approaching… which stores are around me. That kind of information can be provided with the WeWalk,” he told CNN.
The smart cane utilizes the same technology we utilize on our smart devices every single day.
It uses built-in speakers, a voice assistant, Google, and different sensors that send vibrations to navigate and warn about possible dangers above chest level.
The cane is priced around $500 which is less than half the price of most smart phones available. This revolutionary design is going to change a lot of lives.
They say necessity is the mother of invention.
The more people using the WeWalk, the better it will become!
