When someone tries to give me a pile of scrap wood, I usually refuse. I just don’t have the inclination to keep a bunch of wood that I might need at some point lying around. For creative minds like imgur user theobaldr however, these pieces of useless wood can be turned into countless amazing things such as crafts or furniture. That’s exactly what he does with this scrap wood DIY table. I would have never envisioned this pile of old wood becoming something so beautiful.
They received these boards from an old man who claims they were the floorboards for the cold storage at the Cape Town Harbor.
So they laid the boards out and what do ya know? They look like a giant table.
They started by measuring the boards and cutting them to length.
They fit together nicely, it isn’t hard to imagine them once being together as a floor.
Building the legs was the next step. This is done by gluing pieces of wood together then clamping them to get the most secure seal possible
All six legs were then cut from the one glued piece.
The legs were all cut to the same length and excess glue scraped off.
Simple dowel joints make up the entire table because, well theobaldr didn’t really have any experience making joints. Hey, whatever gets the job done.
This is going to be a GIANT table.
Reinforcing the corners on a table this big is a great idea. They weren’t messing around either.
The table top being clamped together. They had to rent special extra long clamps to get this done.
Sanding is one of my most hated things about projects like this, but it is absolutely essential.
The table looks great after all the sanding is done. It brought out some of the great natural wood colors.
This is after the first coat of varnish. It really adds a nice color and gives the table that finishing touch.
The finished product. The table is actually so big that they turned an old car port into a hang out area because it wouldn’t fit anywhere else.
The Feng Shui is now set. This looks like a great place to kick back with some friends for some cold drinks and great conversation.
The way theobaldr repurposed these old boards is really beautiful. The table looks absolutely fantastic and is a great centerpiece to the room they created around it. This creative table would be a great addition to anyone’s hang out area or backyard patio. So the next time you see a bunch of old scrap wood, try to think of the some of the cool and unique things you could do with it. I know I will!
