There aren’t many things that you can do with a salt mine once it has fulfilled its purpose. I mean the mine consists of giant underground chambers, and that’s about it. Not really something a real estate investor is going to be clamoring to develop. So when the Salina Turda in Romania was all mined out in 1932, it simply sat for many years. No one really knew what to do with it, until a group of free thinking investors came along and decided to do something that I never would have thought of. They turned the underground caverns into an expansive amusement park!

The Salina Turda Salt Mine was a major producer of table salt from the Middle Ages all the way to 1932 when it was eventually shut down.

Although the mine is not operational anymore, a group of investors decided to do something incredibly unique to it and let people back inside.

They transformed the caverns into an amusement park, complete with an underground lake you can kayak in!

You would have a hard time believing this was a place on Earth while you’re down here. It looks like something out of an alien world.

After kayaking, you can enjoy a spirited game of ping-pong!

Oh yeah, and what amusement park would be complete without a full size ferris wheel?

Supposedly the park also provides a health benefit. Apparently the excess salt in the air is great for you.

This is definitely a different, but awesome take on what an amusement park can be. I personally don’t like being underground, but I think I could bear it for a little while to explore this amazing place! Kayaking in an underground lake would definitely be on the top of my list of things to do once I got here. Even just looking at the giant walls of rock would provide a sense of fascination and wonder. Whoever thought of this idea needs to keep thinking of awesome things to do with their money.
