Most people have one room in their home that they would love to renovate. Coming up with renovation ideas is often so taxing, that most people don’t ever follow through. This room had been thoroughly used for rock climbing, and was in desperate need of a make over. After 10 years of use and climbing angles that were far too similar, this family decided to update their previous renovations on the room. Not only is this one of the coolest rooms that you’ll find in a house, it’s a great training and practice room for the children to keep their skills sharp for their bouldering competitions.
After years of use, this is the sad state of the room. The walls are mostly the same degree of slant and the hand and toe holds are dirty and just randomly placed making it uninviting.
The room was also impracticle with very little storage, and the storage they did have was out of reach and hard to get to.
They might be a family of rock climbers but can you imagine having to climb that later with one of those large storage bins in your arms? Not exactly the most efficient place to store things!
They decided to do something about it! They started by removing all the old hand and toe holds on the walls!
Then they removed the drywall, exposing the studs. It looks a lot better already!
They even removed some of the framing so they could build a completely different space!
The kids were put to work as well! Here he is removing a nail from some of the 2×4’s!
It might look like a mess, but they had a plan!
They framed the new walls, just like you would frame rafters. Laying them all out on the ground before securing them up on the walls and ceiling!
They worked on it until they got it right! This was their first attempt but they had to readjust the right side because it was too tight near the top where the walls would meet.
Everyone got in on the action, even their son is using the power tools! Never too young to learn how to work!
Now that they have the right angle, they are on a roll getting the framing up! They recycled wood from the old framing they tore down and borrowed some from a friend as well!
Here it is with the framing completed! Before, all the walls were virtually the same degree of difficulty, but with the new plans they have 10, 20, 30 and 40 degree walls as well as a vertical wall at the rear!
Next thing to go up is the plywood.
They also recycled the old plywood they pulled off the previous walls.
They only needed to buy 10 additional sheets to complete the project!
Then some paint to make it look nice and new!
They added padding back to the floor to help cushion any falls people take off the walls. Much of the padding was recycled from the padding in old cars.
On top of the padding they installed new carpet.
Then they took buckets of hand and toe holds to the carwash for a good cleaning. No sense buying new just because they were dirty!
The holds have been laid out to dry, before they can be installed back onto the wall!
Here’s the finished product with all the holds back on the walls!
If you ask me, it looks exponentially better!
It makes you want to go rock climbing!
Not to mention the improved storage!
There are even cubbies for shoes built right into the wall between the studs!
There’s still overhead storage as well but it is much easier to access. The hooks for climbing gear are a great addition, too!
What was a dingy, dirty space that I wouldn’t want to be in for longer than 2 minutes is now inviting!
This is now a space that everyone will want to hang out and will see a ton of use!
Not everyone has a rock wall in their home, but this family does, and it is amazing! It makes me want to have one in my own home! I love that it encourages kids to be active and increase their athleticism, instead of using the space for them to veg out in front of a TV and play video games! An amazing room like this is sure to provide hours and hours of fun and entertainment for this family and their friends for years to come. It will also give the kids a little bit of a competitive edge with their bouldering competitions.
