Exploring was one of the most fun things you could do as a kid. I remember running around the woods in my backyard with my friends when I was younger, just looking for weird stuff. That’s half of being a kid isn’t it? Just looking around for weird stuff to bring back home. Well in the 1800’s, a few kids exploring the hills of Edinburgh, Scotland found something way more weird than anything I could imagine finding as a kid. They were exploring a cave, when they made a startling discovery that has people scratching their heads till this day. Scotland is home to its fair share of ghost stories, this one has to be one of the creepiest I’ve heard of though. Check out their crazy find below:
The year was 1836. A group of friends were out hunting for rabbits at a hill known as Arthur’s Seat.
While searching for rabbit holes, they made a shocking discovery.
Inside they cave they found 17 miniature wooden coffins with a small wooden figure inside each one.
Local townspeople initially believed the dolls were created for witchcraft ceremonies. Investigators later turned up another, even more chilling possibility.
The theory is that these dolls could be connected the murders committed by Burke and Hare in Edinburgh in 1828.
Burke and Hare were a pair of Irish immigrants. They committed a total of 16 murders, and sold the bodies to doctors to use during their dissection lectures. Eventually they were caught, tried and sentenced to death. They were eventually executed.
The number is key in the possible connection between these coffins and the Burke and Hare murders. It’s believe the 17 coffins represent the 17 victims of the murderous duo. The extra coffin is for their first “victim”. Although he died from natural causes, his body was still stolen and sold to medical science.
Imagine if these dolls are connected to these murders? That would be an extremely creepy thing for a couple of kids to find. The possibility that they are connected to each seems like a decent probability as well. It seems like to much of a coincidence that number of victims of the murders matches the number of coffins. The location of them is also very suspicious. These murders took place in Edinburgh, and the tiny coffins were found right outside of Edinburgh.
