Waking up while camping is usually a peaceful and serene experience. It’s just you and your friends and/or family surrounded by the natural sounds of nature as the critters in the forest start to wake up. It can really be a life changing experience. One thing you would probably never expected to be woken up by while camping is Lions though. Unless you’re camping in a game reserve in Africa that is. Two tourists got the surprise of a lifetime when they woke up to a strange sound outside of their tent. Their eyes went wide with wonder when they realized what it was.
Francie Francisca Lubbe and her partner were camping in the Mabuasehube game reserve in Botswana when they received a once in a lifetime experience.
They awoke to two female lions licking the morning dew off their tent window!
The couple stayed perfectly still, which couldn’t have been easy.
The tent window is almost completely see through, so the two got an amazing glimpse at these amazing creatures.
Francie described the experience as “very special” on her Facebook page. Her photos have also garnered much attention, and it’s obvious to see why.
“There was no noise, no smell. We tried to be very quiet not to disturb them.”
Thankfully this encounter didn’t end in tragedy.
The lions eventually made their way back into the brush after they had their fill of the dew.

What an amazing experience this must have been! To get this close to lions is not something everyone gets to do. Being able to do this in their natural habitat would make the whole thing even more exciting. An African safari is one of my life’s dreams. It would give me a whole new appreciation for the circle of life and the struggle these animals go through every day to survive.
