Summer is here and as a parent, we are constantly looking for ways to keep our kids happy and busy! All summer long we hear the constant complaint of, “I’m bored!” I’m sure I did this as a kid too. With summer in full swing, here at BuzzNick we are looking for ways to keep your kids entertained. When I saw this LEGO gummy candy video on YouTube, I knew it was a must share. Grant Thompson who has been dubbed “The King Of Random” made an amazing video showing you how you can make your very own LEGO gummy candy. Of course, when you are making these with kids, let them know that they are gummy LEGOs, and that they shouldn’t eat real LEGOs unless they want a trip to the doctor or dentist.

For this fun project, you’ll need Jell-O, light corn syrup, and gelatine. You’ll need 2 envelopes of gelatine per batch.

To start this project, get a measuring cup. Fill it with 1/2 cup of cold water and 1/4 cup of light corn syrup. It’s very important that the water is cold, or you’ll end up with white clumps in your candy liquid. Stir well until the liquid is clear, then pour the mixture into a pot on the stove. Don’t turn the stove on quite yet.

Next you’ll add the 2 packets of gelatine, along with the packet of Jell-O. If you decide to make more than one color of LEGO blocks, you’ll need to make them in separate pots. Let the gelatine absorb into the water, stirring slowly. Once the gelatine has been fully absorbed, turn on your stove to medium-low heat for 5-10 minutes. While on the oven, stir every 1-2 minutes to ensure the candy liquid does not burn.

Once the gelatine is completely liquified, you’ll know that the candy syrup is ready. The above LEGO trays were found at the LEGO store and are actually ice-cube trays. Be careful when pouring because the liquid is hot, and it will burn. Once the liquid is in the molds, let it sit for 5 hours before removing from the trays.

If you don’t have a LEGO store near you, you can also make your own LEGO mold. All you will need is actual LEGO bricks along with a two part silicone kit from a special effects store.

Once the mold sets up, you can add your candy syrup. If you place a clean LEGO sheet on the bottom, the candy will have LEGO nubs on the bottom, which will make them stackable. Once you put them in the mold and put the sheet on top, place a heavy item like a book on top. Let them sit there for about 6 hours.

As you can see, each piece of candy will now be able to be stacked on top of one another, just like real LEGOs.

If you are going to make these ahead of time, and want to try different colors, pour the candy syrup in a cup and let them cool overnight. When you remove the gummy from the glass, you’ll want to cut off the top layer of white gummy foam on the top. Then you can place the gummy block in a pot on medium-low heat to melt them back down.

And yes, the little nubs you put in there when making your own actually work. You can stack them together and make fun shapes before eating them.

If you want to add a little nutritional value to your LEGO gummy candies, then you can add 8 – 500mg tablets of Vitamin C into your gelatin mix. Just find the chewable Vitamin C tablets, blend into a powder, then add them to the pan. It’ll give the gummy candies a little bit of a sour flavor.

These, amazingly enough, don’t look all that difficult, especially if you have access to LEGO ice-cube trays or are creative enough to make your own out of silicon special effects kits. Also you don’t have to limit these gummy candies to just LEGOs. Any candy mold or ice-cube tray will work really well. Are you going to give this recipe a try?
