It’s kind of an old joke that a “sanitation engineer” is a fancy way of saying “garbage man.” The people who look down on the job may like to know that garbage collectors are the single largest job in the waste management industry. According to the BLS, garbage collectors earned a median salary of $32,720. The highest-paid 10 percent of garbage collectors made $58,130, and the lowest-paid made $18,910. The highest-paying metropolitan areas for these workers are Merced, California, New York City, and Santa Cruz, California. Recently someone caught two garbage men playing with garbage. Hey, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, right? Check out the video at the bottom of this post to see what they were doing.
The job is not exactly glamorous.
Especially on days like that!
And if I saw something like that I would quit, no matter how much you paid me.
So naturally they need to blow off a little steam and have some fun.
Having a good sense of humor probably goes a long way.
Check out the video below of the garbage men playing some foosball that someone had left to throw in the trash. I wonder how long they played. Best two out of three maybe?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that employment in this industry will increase 16.2 percent, adding 21,600 new jobs, by 2022. The main drivers of this growth include a rise in population, individual income, and more people choosing to recycle. So back in the day, parents may have told their kids to work hard in school or else they would end up being garbage men. But looking at the numbers, it’s actually a solid job. Plus you get to play Foosball!
