Have you ever imagined being able to walk on water? I’m sure you have, it’s likely we all have at one point or another. It would definitely be one of the coolest things to ever happen to anyone. The floating piers were 3 kilometers of yellow-colored pathways that temporarily connected the shores of Italy’s Lake iso to islands at its center. It is considered an art project, but it is definitely meant to be actually used. Check out the minds behind it and how it works below.

Designed by husband and wife/artists Christo and the late Jean-Claude, the floating walkway is called “The Floating Piers.”

The walkway connects two towns of Monte Isola and Sulzano, as well as encircles the island of San Paola.

220,000 high-density polyethylene cubes make up the path.

It’s also covered by 100,000 square meters of yellow fabric!

It also changes to a shimmering gold throughout the day, and takes on a reddish hue when wet.

Creating works of art that people could actually enjoy was always one of the artists greatest missions.

They also did not want people to have to pay to experience it.

The walkway is secured in place by giant cement blocks.

The whole structure is almost 2 miles long.

This would be an incredible way to experience some authentic Italian culture.

This is an incredibly cool concept for an artist to undertake. Many people feel that the only type of art are things that you can’t touch and that belong in cases in museums. I don’t agree with that at all. I feel that art that you can feel and touch has just as much appeal as a beautiful painting. If you’re heading to Italy within the next couple weeks, be sure to check this thing out.
