I Made A DIY Floating Bed From Scratch In 4 Days

Have you ever actually built something with your own hands? Building something with your own two hands can be a very rewarding job. There is just a real sense of satisfaction whenever you look at something you created. I imagine it’s what being a parent feels like. Building has always been a hobby of mine. I would go out to the shed in my backyard when I was a kid and build soap box cars, model airplanes and pretty much anything else you could think of. Well this guy had an idea for something to build that will definitely be a talking point when people come over. While it may look difficult, this is actually an incredibly easy project. Check out this incredible floating bed frame made from scratch by reddit user downtownwatts. You’ve never seen anything like this!

A subframe was made out of 2 x 8’s. He then added 2 x 4’s that were cantilevered 15 inches over the 2 x 4’s on the front and sides. This will give the box spring and mattress a wide base to sit on, while allowing the 2 x 8’s to support the weight of the bed. The cost of the 2 x 4’s and the 2 x 8’s totaled $140.

Unfortunately the subframe of the bed wouldn’t fit through the door of the room fully assembled. He had assembled it in his shop down below, but had to take the whole thing apart and reassemble it inside the room.

He screwed down a 1/2″ piece of OSB plywood onto the 2 x 4 subframe. He used two sheets of plywood with a total cost of $18.

He then added walnut framing boards that measured 1 x 10 originally. He cut them down to 1 x 8 because the were way too tall for the side of a bed frame. He already had these board, so it didn’t come him anything. If you were to buy them however, it would be roughly $200 for just these 4 board alone.

Corner caps were next. He simply mitered 4″ piece of walnut and “L” capped the corners of the frame.

After it was completed, he wasn’t satisfied with the look. The shadow created from the overhead ceiling did not give the bed the floating look that he wanted.

To fix this, he simply went out to Wal-Mart and got some rope light that costs $20. He attached those to the 2 x 4 subframe. He definitely got the look he was going for after that.

This floating bed frame looks amazing with the lights off. It’s like Aladdin’s magic carpet, except a bed!

This project was pretty darn simple, and very cost-effective. I’ve really never seen a project like this before. It turned out fantastic though, and I wouldn’t be surprised if you saw more and more people doing this to their bedrooms. In fact, I may just try this  floating bed frame myself!
