Grizzler is a beautiful border collie who happens to be the world’s first “phodographer!” He was the star of a Nikon commercial where they created a device that monitored Grizzler’s heart rate. This monitor would then send the information via bluetooth to the case that was strapped to the dog’s neck/chest which contained the Coolpix L31 camera. The case would trigger the shutter on the camera to take photographs any time his heart rate exceeded a specific rate. While on his walk Grizzler’s heart rate would average 100-110 bpm, but if the heart rate reached 119 or higher the camera is activated and pictures were taken capturing a shot of whatever he was facing at the time his heart rate increased!
Nikon says: “Photos can capture the world’s beauty within a single frame, and photographers translate what they feel into what others can see. With a device that reacts to increased heart rates, we can literally connect emotions to every photo.”
This is Grizzler, the beautiful border collie turned professional photographer, modeling the camera that accompanied him on his walks!

The case that was used to strap the camera to Grizzler is what allowed this special dog to take pictures because it would respond to the information received by the heart rate monitor via bluetooth.

A crew followed Grizzler around to document his walk from a different perspective as well as to ensure his safety. I love the idea of turning emotions into photographs with the use of Heartography.

Dog’s love eggs and Grizzler is no exception. I’m just wondering why there is a carton with egg shells containing egg yolks on the street.

Grizzler was excited to run into some friends!

Who doesn’t get excited to see black swans?

Apparently Grizzler has a thing for poodles!

I wonder if the crabs made him nervous or if he was happy to see them…

Grizzler stopped by a playground and was happy to see a kid playing there!

Not only is Grizzler excited when he sees other dogs, but he also likes shadows too!

This cat was able to peak his interest too, even from behind the glass window!

This is one of my favorites. That he gets excited seeing proof that someone is home!

Pigeon!

Lots of pigeons! I wonder if he was excited about them or the rice they were eating. I’m also surprised he was able to get this close without them flying away!

Another poodle! He’s a lady’s man!

He certainly likes cats! They must know each other because the cat doesn’t seem too concerned!

People are always exciting! Especially when food is involved! Hopefully they shared with Grizzler!

Turtles got his heart racing too!

Visiting his kitty friend again!

I love that these unusual mushrooms got him excited too!

Here is the Nikon commercial showing Grizzler’s experience as a phodographer along with more of the pictures he captured!
I loved being able to see what made his heart start racing! There has been some criticism towards Nikon because of how clear the photographs are and that you can’t see Grizzler’s fur or muzzle in the picture, but they maintain it was actually Grizzler taking the pictures himself. Afterwards they combed through all the pictures (I imagine there were probably thousands of them) to pick out the best of the best. Also, Grizzler caught a picture of food in a van, and in the reflection you can see someone (obviously not Grizzler) squatting down at the right angle of where Grizzler would have been taking the photo. I have to say that it does look like Grizzler had help taking these pictures, but Nikon says the man in the reflection was part of the crew documenting Grizzler’s journey. I wonder if it’s possible that Grizzler took the original photograph, and because it didn’t turn out a crew member went back and got a better shot of what the dog took initially.
Even if he did have help, I still think it’s a great idea and I choose to hope that the majority of the photographs were from the dog himself. Grizzler’s journey makes me want to see what my own cats and dogs get excited about around my own home!
