The Olympic games are supposed to be an event that unites the world in competition. Though nations are competing against each other, the struggle of competition is something that brings us together. The Olympics are usually held in big cities that can handle all the accommodations that are required for the games. Ever since it was announced that Rio De Janeiro was chosen as the location for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, questions have been asked about if the city could handle what was required to make the games a success. While the games haven’t been unsuccessful, they have brought a spotlight on the absolutely horrid living conditions that exist in the Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The pictures that are coming out the city are quite astonishing, and don’t show the city in the best light. Check out the living conditions that exist in the city hosting the summer games.

The amount of trash everywhere is absolutely astonishing. This is supposed to be a modern city.

There aren’t many places in the entire city you can go without finding mounds of garbage.

Everyday piles of trash are lit on fire.

This place is actually a beach, but you would be hard pressed to see the difference between it and a landfill.

Yeah, that definitely looks like a body wrapped in a blanket….

You have to wonder how this place ever got picked to host the Olympic games.

The amount of garbage and pollution in the water is absolutely astounding.

I would never set foot in this. Absolutely disgusting.

There is so much pollution, that massive fish die-offs are a pretty regular occurrence.

Why are there so many creepy dolls floating in the water everywhere?

The drug trade is thriving during the Olympic games though. Someone even decided to use the Olympic logo as advertising.

The threat of the Zika virus actually caused many athletes to decline to participate in the games.

The country is even in the middle of a great social upheaval and political crisis stemming from a huge corruption case involving the president Dilma Rousseff.

You also have to be wary of the police. Last year, police accounted for 1 out of every 5 murders!

A Jaguar was even killed during the Olympic torch ceremony! It was released as part of the ceremony in the city of Manaus, but was shot and killed when a solider pulling guard duty felt it got too close. Really man?
Now I’m not trying to just drag Brazil through the mud here. It’s a beautiful country from what I hear, and the people are extremely friendly. You can’t deny that there are plenty of things that should have prevented it from being the site of the Olympic games. The country is in some serious turmoil right now, and it definitely has caused problems for athletes, and people visiting to watch the games. Some athletes are even refusing to stay in the Olympic village, citing its lack of amenities and overall poor design and construction.
