When the ladies of the Australia Islamic Centre heard about The Australian bushfires, they knew they had to do something. Within 48 hours of asking for donations on their Facebook page, they were able to raise about $1,500 and 5 trucks worth of supplies.
1. The group is from Newport, Victoria which is a suburb of Melbourne.
2. After receiving $1,500 in donations and 5 trucks full of supplies, they traveled over 4 hours to get them to those in need.
3. Once they arrived in Johnsonville, the ladies began distributing the supplies they had received.
4. But it didn’t stop there. According to CNN, when they arrived to Johnsonville, the ladies immediately starting preparing breakfast for 150 hungry and exhausted firefighters who have been tirelessly fighting the Australian bushfires.
5. “[I] extend the thanks from the fire affected areas,” Rodney Baylis, a Johnsonville firefighter, is heard telling the group in a video posted on Facebook. “I just been on the phone to the captain down there and he nearly broke into tears when I told him what we are bringing in for them today.”
6. The group said they started making plans on Thursday to help out the people affected by the Australian bushfires.
7. After they spoke with the Melbourne Fire Brigade, they started asking for donations such as female hygiene products, water bottles, fruit, milk and baby wipes.
8. The day after asking for the donations, they hosted a sausage sizzle after their prayer service to raise money.
9. The event was originally scheduled to raise money for their youth program.
10. They changed their mind after seeing the devastation of the fires and decided to “donate it all to the bushfire appeal.”
11. The group was escorted by the Melbourne Fire Brigade to different areas to distribute the items.
12. They wrote on their Facebook page, “”These sisters worked tirelessly to help organize aid for the bushfire appeal. Their work began on Friday noon, where they braved the heat to organize a sausage sizzle and raise money for the appeal; $1500 was raised. They then worked throughout Friday night sorting the much-needed items into different sections, getting them ready to load on to the trucks,.”
