According to Reuters, forest fires in the Amazon rain forest are generating so much smoke, that it can be seen from space. NASA released some of the satellite images.

The entire city of Sao Paulo, Brazil has went completely dark and forest fires continue to burn over 1,700 miles away

One twitter user said, “Imagine how much has to be burning to create that much smoke”

Usually the Amazon rainforest has been near fire-resistant because of its humid conditions, but an increase in droughts and human activity has caused the increase in wildfires.

Experts from Brazil’s National Space Research Institute (INPE) say the Amazon has suffered losses at an accelerated rate since President Jair Bolsonaro took office in January because he has vowed to develop the Amazon region for farming and mining.
