Humans are very intelligent creatures, usually able to solve most mysteries. Believe it or not, there are still many mysteries that remain unsolved.
Here are 25 very well-known ciphers that have never been solved. These are amazing.
1. Blitz Ciphers. These were discovered in a bombed cellar in WWII in East London. Some believe it could be 18th century Freemason ciphers.
2. Navajo Code Talkers. Navajo is one of the hardest to learn languages around. Because of that allies in WWII would use Navajo Indians to send encrypted messages.
3. Shugborough Inscription. These letters were carved into a stone in Shugborough Hall in England. To this day, no one has figured out what it means.
4. Chaocipher. This one actually has been solved, but for years no one could decode the cipher that author J.F. Byrne published in his autobiography.
5. McCormick Cipher. The body of Ricky McCormick was found in 1991 in Missouri with two cryptic ciphers. The FBI has asked for the publics help in cracking this code.
6. Tama Shud. On December 1, 1948, an unidentified body washed up on a beach in South Australia. The only thing on him was a scram of paper that read “taman shud” which means “ended” in Persian.
7. Rohonc codex. Named after a city in Western Hungary, but was written in an unknown language.
8. Proto-Elamite. This was first found in 2,900 BC in Iran. It has never been deciphered.
9. Bacon Cipher. This was created by Sir Francis Bacon. There has been speculation that he was the one actually responsible for the works of Shakespeare.
10. Vinca / Old European. These symbols were found on artifacts between 6,000 to 4,500 BC in south-east Europe.
11. Rongorongo Script of Easter Island. Europeans found wooden tablets on Easter Island in 1868 and there has been little progress in figured out what they say.
12. Pigeon Cipher. There have been messages from WWII found attached the remains of a pigeon.
13. Enigma Encryption System. The encryption method was used by Germany in WWII to encrypt messages that could never be deciphered.
14. Richard Feynman’s Challenge Ciphers. In 1987, Richard Feynman was given three samples of code by a fellow scientists, but only one was ever solved.
15. Indus Script. The Indus Valley civilization existed in 2600 to 1800 BC and left behind thousands of objects inscribed with a pictographic script that had about 400 different signs on them. To date, none has been deciphered.
16. Chinese “Gold Bar” Ciphers. Seven gold bars were issued to General Wang in 1933 in Shanghai, China. All contain pictures, ancient writing and a form of script writing.
17. The Phaistos Dis. This was a 6 inch circular tablet made of clay discovered in Crete in the early 1900’s. It has about 45 different symbols on and has remain unsolved. Some believe that if it is solved, it could help decipher Linear A.
18. Linear A. A large number of clay tables were found in 1990 and they dated back to 1800 BC. They contains a type of script named Linear A and Linear B. Linear B was deciphered in the 1950’s, while Linear A remains unsolved.
19. D’Agapeyeff Cipher. Alexander D’Agapeyeff wrote an elementary book in 1939 called ‘Codes and Ciphers’. It was a book on cryptography. It was never solved and the author embarrassedly admitted later that he could no longer remember how he’d encrypted it.
20. Bellaso Ciphers. A 16th century cryptologist was responsible for creating many techniques that has still not been decrypted.
21. Dorabella Cipher. 1987, composer Edward Elgar {of “Pomp and Circumstance” fame) sent an encrypted messaged to his friend. To this day, it’s never been solved.
22. Kryptos. In 1990, the CIA had a sculpture installed with encrypted letters to challenge the employees. Only 3 out of the 4 have been solved.
23. Zodiac Killer Ciphers. Between 1965 and 1974, the Zodiac killer sent over 20 encrypted messages to police. A few of them still remain unsolved.
24. Voynich Manuscript. This 600 year old manuscript is written in an undecipherable language. Estimated to be over 600 years old, it contains pictures of plants and people in strange positions.
25. Beale Ciphers. In 1885, a pamphlet was anonymously published in Virginia. It contained tureen encrypted messages next to a story that claimed it would reveal where a treasure was buried by a man by the name of Beale. Only 1 of the 3 have been solved.
