Here are 10 Dumb and dumber facts that you probably don’t know. Some of these would have completely changed the movie and probably putting a stop to its success… Here they are:

Many of the movie’s best lines were improvised by Jim Carrey. The Farrelly brothers gave him the reigns to play with the script while filming. “We’ve landed on the moon!” was one example of a line improvised by Jim Carrey.

Jim Carrey negotiated a $6.3 million pay raise for his part. Jim Carey was still only known for his roll in In Living Color when producers offered him the roll as Lloyd Christmas for $700k. However, shortly after the offer the movie Ace Ventura: Pet Detective hit movie screens and boosted Carrey into stardom allowing him to negotiate a much better salary for staring in Dumb and Dumber. Instead of $700k he was paid 7 million!

Despite Jeff Daniels already being a well-known actor the reason he was offered the part of Harry was because of a commercial he had done in the early 80’s.

Another example of an improvised moment is the “most annoying sound in the world” which was improvised by Jim Carrey. The look on Jeff Daniel’s face was not acting- he was generally curious what would come out of Carrey’s mouth!

The scene in the diner where Lloyd and Harry scam Sea Bass into paying for their meals was inspired by a movie called Something Wild which Lloyd had seen on tv once. But what you might not know is that the character in that movie was played by Jeff Daniels…

Nicholas Cage was offered the roll for Harry and Martin Short and Steve Martin were offered the roll for Lloyd (all three turned the offers down) before they went to Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey

Lloyd’s watch was a knockoff of an already very affordable brand called a Casio which retails for about $16

In the bathroom stall (right before meeting up with Sea Bass) here are some of the other scribbles shared by previous stall patrons: “Why are you looking up here when the joke is in your hand?,” “Bye Bye William Frawley,” “NAMBLA Rules,” and “Why the hell is everyone so goddamned angry?”

Because no one would take the script seriously when it was called “Dumb and Dumber” the writers had to change the name to “A Power Tool is Not a Toy” in order to inspire studios to even consider reading the script.

Dumb and Dumber is a movie that everyone can relate to. Okay, I realize that we might not be on the same level of stupidity as Lloyd and Harry but we’ve all done some pretty stupid things in our lives at one point or another. This movie makes the best of the dumb things we’ve done. Thats exactly what makes this movie so awesome! I can’t wait to see the sequel now that I know these 10 Dumb and Dumber facts.
